Course Information: Medical Billing and Coding

Maria Healthcare has become big business! With the creation of HMO's, PPO's, and managed care, doctors need employees who understand the complexities of insurance billing. Because of this demand, MIBC has become one of the most popular careers in healthcare.

The Allen School Online Medical Insurance Billing & Coding program prepares you for Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification from the American Health Information Management Association. This is an Accelerated Program (9 months versus 15 months at other schools) designed to prepare students for entry-level positions (CCA track) or advanced positions (CSS track) as Medical Insurance Billing & Coding associates in physician’s offices, clinics and hospitals.

Students Will

  • obtain an understanding of the overall health care system and health insurance
  • understand the role of a medical billing and coding associate and the necessary skills needed to be successful in this position
  • acquire and accurately utilize diagnostic and procedural medical terminology related to human anatomy and physiology and common diseases
  • practice interviewing, documentation, and proper methods of obtaining patient information necessary for successful claims management
  • understand and employ the proper management and execution of various medical insurance plans and programs
  • prepare insurance claims manually and by computer, using the Clinical Modification System (ICD9-CM), the Current Procedural Terminology, Fourth Ed. (CPT4), and Health Care Procedure Coding System (HCPCS)
  • develop basic employability skills: interpersonal communication, written communication and documentation, and organization techniques
  • Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of the health care worker, related to the medical office and common office billing practices
  • Be prepared to take the CCA certification exam upon completion of the program
